Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who chairs the Immigration Subcommittee in the Senate, told the Associated Press yesterday that he’s planning on getting an immigration bill to the floor by Labor Day.

That’s more optimistic than the President or even many Congressional advocates have been willing to be.

Schumer has said that in order to get legislation passed, it will have to be tough on future flows of immigrants. Look for a bill that heightens border security but creates a path (albeit a long and convoluted one) to citizenship for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants that currently live in the U.S.
