But it's increasingly a craggy, wrinkled voice from a defensive, fearful and isolated past. From dyspeptic people who have lost life's battles many more times than they have won, but cling to their keyboards.

It's hard for us to believe that our own values are not the best, or that our arts are not the most beautiful.

As we undertake these overseas adventures, are we just imposing our American values on cultures which are simply different? Is it a universal truth that women should be treated equally with men, everywhere and all the time?

It is an expression of my opinion of her views. 

But if you'd like to consider me a source of news, and hence capable of bias, that would be fine. A compliment even. And subscription-free, though donations would be accepted.

I never said she's a "joke." Her views are frightening and retrograde, not funny.

If we accept that our governments have no place in matters of faith, where the individual alone may judge, then of course these types of displays are an unwarranted intrusion. The ultimate expression of religious tolerance would be for governments to remain solidly on the religious sidelines.

The standard of proof in criminal matters is specific to that context, where the liberty and sometimes even life of the accused is at stake. Hence the need for proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
