Maybe you should look into your local immigration office. To be able to come here legally you have to: pass a physical, be literate in English(speak, read and write), you have to have all of the immunizations that we require, you cannot have any communicable diseases, you cannot have any negative medical history, you cannot have been convicted of a crime unless you are trying to claim asylum, you cannot be with child, if you are from certain countries you have to have sponsorship, you have to have a visa and use that visa for the purpose intended (those who don't are living here illegally). Not only do you have to abide by all of these regulations but you can also be required to obtain and keep a job and sufficient living quarters, meaning you apply for government help you are at risk for deportation. And in some instances the State Department can require immigrants from certain countries to already have a bachelor's degree so when they come over here they will be productive members of society.
So really which sect of immigrants are you talking about?

Your insistence on English only is further proof of my earlier assertions that you are simply a xenophobe.

Odd... since all the items you mentioned apply to illegal immigrants, not legal ones.
The majority of legal immigrants are not the ones who fall into the category you described. They are not the ones heavily living on welfare, in public housing, not learning english, and so on.
That group mainly consists of the demographic groups who illegally immigrate from Hispanic countries.

How does that have anything to do with what I said?
Everything I said was a fact. Not opinion. I was merely speaking of past immigration with an assertion that we should continue to allow immigration. I was explaining an interpretation of the article - the fact is that we all descended from immigrants, legal immigrants. I made no mention of current illegal immigration. Immigration is much bigger than that.
There is far more to immigration in America than your xenophobic fear of Hispanics coming from Mexico.

That's right "therightwinger"! I say we also all speak the language of the land! We don't need none of that other language stuff. I say we all make Cherokee, Dakota, Delaware, Navajo, Miccosukee, and Seneca the OFFICIAL languages of the land. That way no one can come in here and speak their in their foreign tongue.

Being American is a state of mind. You can be an American and be from all over the world. America is place of acceptance, a place built by all for all. We are a mix of many groups forming one American identity. This is what makes America great. To continue to be great we must be open to immigration and to others, open to change and to inclusiveness.

I do not believe the article is trying to say directly that you are a direct immigrant. It is more along the lines of we are all immigrants, based on the idea and concept that we all come from immigrants and the basis of immigration generally. America is built on immigration and immigrants, that is indisputable history. Had it not been for the relatively free movement of people and the immigration of your forefathers, you would not be here today. We are all a product of immigration. America as a nation is a product of immigration. Without it, America as we know it, would not be here today.

But where do you draw the line? Great great great great? Great great great? Why not look at the commonalities between people's immigration story, instead? If you do, I think you'll see that they all wanted the same thing --- a chance to work hard, save money and build a better life. What is more American than that?

look at it this way my family has been here since the 1700s i was born here and so where my parents and so on so to say we are all immigrants is false i have never been any where else and to say im an immigrant because my great great great great great great gram was is like saying im responsible for slavery because they had slaves now doesnt that sound stupid

What is an American ?? Truly it is getting more and more harder to define and give an answer to this question... This issue around the Mexican Borders and the problem with immigration is a real complexed and complicated one .. To resolve this issue, the way things stand at the present are near hopeless. Because America is hooked on cheap labor and drugs from MEXCIO... They need and want people for cheap labor but don,t want them to have citizenship or what???

Now that I ve read the article I think it s cute, but it's a tad naive. In theory yes we are all immigrants, however those of us who've lived here for years understand there is a process to American life, just like those who pay to come here also understand that process. Certain people from certain countries are not allowed over here (well they weren't for a time). There's also an immunization process that immigrants have to go through. As far as preventable diseases we hardly have to worry about that due to the fact we get immunized at birth. Our immune systems are not used to some of the other things that are ravaging other countries. We don't have the need to walk around with masks on our faces. We don't have to worry about coming in contact with a rusty nail. Our immigration policies are not about keeping people out, it's about protecting those who are already here. The more that people hop across the borders and stay the more we have to deal with factors of low income housing being over crowded, disease, pests, state budgets being blown, etc. People that come over here or stay illegally cannot get legit jobs. They are not paying taxes so they are not contributing to their share of paying the bills that we all create.
In Reston, VA the residents there don't pay for water, it comes out of their taxes. So if a flood of illegal immigrants come into that area what will happen to water consumption? It will sky rocket and then those residents will have to deal with higher taxes or they will have to start being charged for their water consumption while tax rates stay the same. Now is that fair? Cities and towns all across America have perks for taxpayers but those perks are taken advantage of by the influx of people not having to pay tax. And now I shall step off of my soap box.
