The Koran and the Ballot Box

Submitted by Pierre Sarkozy | 5 months ago

NY Times - 'Whatever happens in Iran in the aftermath of this month’s fraudulent elections, one thing is clear: we are witnessing not just a fascinating power struggle among men who’ve known each other intimately for 30 years, but the unraveling of the religious idea that has shaped the growth of modern Islamic fundamentalism since the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in 1928.'

Some observers from inside Iran are reporting that people are protesting "Death to Dictator! God is Great!" Does that mean that they are protesting against current regime and want a more progressive leadership of Moussavi? The author of the article is stressing the conflicts between democratic and theocratic republic - do you think these people are protesting against Islamic republic?

We have reached the age of accountability when tyrants, despots, religious radicals and war mongers will face great stuggles to sustain their rules and laws.. It is a time when the tainted words of commercial religions will have to be corrected. The manipulative language insurted in their text books will not bind the souls to worship. They will have to admit the words of the prophets were manipulated to insure power, greed and power. Words of men, not God issued the texts to assure men had the ear of God and the blessings of heaven to allow them to rule without mercy, compassion or tolerance. Now is the time when God is speaking directly to the hearts of his children. Men are not God, Their text books lie. If a man lives his life to serve war and greed, he is not a servant of God. Nor can he rule a nation if prejudice against women or children is a rule of law. It is time to give peace a chance. It is long overdue. Iran is a good example of how men will struggle to sustain power. Old men will loose this battle. We reach out for leaders who respect all citizens. It will not be an easy task, but time will defeat the old and the young will rull with intelligence and fairness. This is our destiny. Women and children will not longer be property. They will be recognized as a force to powerful to overcome

it's not that tough. "We as Americans believe every society should live free." "We support democracy and the peoples choice." Period

I don't believe this will catch fire in other countries till the people decide to revolt and risk death in battle as opposed to death for expressing speech.

These countries are brutal to it's people. I believe in Iran the concentration of people and very young people at that make the Iranians peoples dream a potential reality.

It will be interesting to see if/how this affects political Islam elsewhere.

Not sure if it will emily. The GEAT Irianian people have protested before. Yet this does look a little bit more intense or techology is letting us see more. I have great respect for these people. They are standing up for their rights and THEIR country.

They want to be free and Iran. we want to be lead and be a part of the world.

We used to be the GREAT IRANIAN people once ago.

We are more like Iraqi's now. SHEEP

Alas, therein lies why we should never look to the state for morality or moral authority. President Obama most certainly has his own opinion regarding these matters - as do you, as do I. I think it's safe to say that most Americans would like to see the government of Iran overthrown by its own people and be replaced by a more democratic and open one.

However, it is simply not the role of our government to make these decisions or provide these moral evaluations. Individuals and their voluntary organizations are more than capable of voicing their own opinions, their solidarity with the people of Iran. The problems arise when our government takes actions and makes judgments. The state doesn't do well in these sort of matters and typically only fouls things up.

If Americans want to show their solidarity with the people of Iran, they should demonstrate in the streets of the United States and say so. Tell them: "we support you and want you to pursue self-determination". This is what we would want from them, if the shoe was on the other foot.

Obama is in a tough position. If he says nothing, he risks being seen as complicit in the murder of protesters. And if he gets involved....well, Ironhead pretty much summed it up....

Indeed. Let's just hope that the West stay out of Iran's affairs. The last time we really intervened in Iran, we virtually sewed the seeds of the Islamic revolution (CIA overthrowing Mossadegh and installing the Shah).
