Biden to take lead role on Iraq Biden to take lead role on Iraq

Submitted by opentalk | 5 months ago

Newsweek - Biden's portfolio is expanding. NEWSWEEK has learned that President Obama has asked Biden to take the lead role on Iraq as the U.S. begins its scheduled drawdown of combat troops, a move that comes as administration officials are expressing concerns about the uptick in violence and political instability in the region.

Biden's role will be something of an unofficial envoy to Iraq, though he won't handle day-to-day dealings with officials.

Think, probably, but turnaround is fair play. The best that can be hoped is he is like Bush. Bush was much better one to one, many foriegn leaders genuinely liked him our enemies didn't which bothers me not one bit. Putin was a misjudgement on Bushes part that was probably wishful thinking.

I think he's a fundamentally smart guy who often expresses himself in dumb ways, at least in the public/media context where they will be judged differently. His "Obama will be tested" comments last year for instance were probably completely true, but his meaning was lost in a media atmosphere and to a public that don't encourage depth or candidness. I think a lot of his comments are more just badly worded or expressed in ways that ignore the reality of the cable news cycle, as opposed to him being unintelligent or inarticulate himself, per se.

He's not Bush is what I'm saying, basically.

Why would he be any better in private than he is in public, does he have competant handlers to do the talking? Kennedy, Shumer and Durbin and other mental midgets are not a scale to judge foreign policy experts on.

For all his dumb public comments, Biden is a force to be reckoned with on foreign policy, and he was one of the most respected members of the Senate in that area. I think this will be a good thing and is likely the right role for him.

I will be interested to see how Biden approaches the role. It's too early for me to decide if this is a good thing or not, but any form of peaceful communication seems like a step in the right direction.
