Reuters - Democrats achieved their biggest majority in the U.S. Senate in decades on Tuesday as Al Franken of Minnesota finally took his seat -- but President Barak Obama will still have to fight hard to muster the votes to pass healthcare reform and other major initiatives.

Okay, I think I where your confusion on this and the article DCHERRY posted comes from...that description isn't my writing, it's just the opening paragraph of the original news article. Some people put text from the article in there, some put their own comments. Some put both. I usually just put the first part of the article though.

I do think the article is right though. Those are major initiatives and party politics are only so strong; every Senator or Representative has their own constituents and their own reasons for voting the way they do; hence, there will probably be some Republicans voting for Cap and Trade, and some Democrats against health care. On some of the more difficult ones, Obama and the rest of the Democrats will need to come to a careful compromise that the majority can agree on.
