The search for ways to reduce carbon emissions has led to government grant money for schemes ranging from promising to wacky. Recognizing that there is no currently viable replacement for fossil fuels, with the possible exception of nuclear power, the US and other countries with large coal deposits are desperately looking for ways to continue burning coal without incurring the wrath of nature or the IPCC. Clear evidence of the seriousness of this effort is evident in this week's special edition of Science, dedicated to carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology. Find out more about why the Obama administration is pushing "clean coal" over nuclear power at http://theresilientearth.com/?q=content/serious-black-quest-clean-coal

And the technology is growing that can deal with that waste. A system that combines the size of France's and the science and structure of the Canadian (including waste management) would be the best place to start.

The US could also take a lesson from this report. Nuclear energy is an excellent option we should explore, yet never do. It is both cost effective and highly efficient. It is more green than the average person assumes. To many people see the Hollywood version of nuclear power as environmentally evil and unsafe, which it is not. Simply look at the nuclear power systems in Canada and France, two excellent examples. There are things the US can still learn from elsewhere.
