Politico - A strong majority of Americans support levying higher taxes if that ensures the preservation of Social Security, according to a nationwide poll conducted last month.

Pegged to Friday’s 74th anniversary of Social Security, the survey shows that, when asked, 77% of those sampled agree that Social Security should be guaranteed for future generations “even if it means increasing working Americans contributions to Social Security.â€

If you add all licenses, fees and taxes we are paying 50% or more, as Jefferson pointed out how much more do you think can be leached out before there is a revolt? What the founders wrote is as pertinate today as the day they were written, if you want socialism move to Cuba.

Thomas Jefferson believed in isolationism and a a weak central government. Today, America is the foremost political, economic, and military power in the world. In order for this to continue, the American federal government needs to have money. So take your pick, we can either pay high taxes and use our clout and power to continue to shape world politics in our favor, or we can lower taxes and allow our financial markets to crash, lose our ability to compete with the economic powerhouses of china and the european union, and accept our place in the world as farmers, miners, and industrialists. While I think we would be perfectly happy as the latter, let me remind you that while we will always have an abundance of farm land, our oil resources are limited, our mining backbone is coal which has little export value and is quickly becoming obsolete, and countries like China, India, and every third world country are willing to do the same work we are for a tenth of the pay, which kills our industrial industry. Do you really think that whatever you would do with your extra money from lower taxes is worth leaving a country like that for your children?

"If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, and give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; And the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they do now, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account; but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains around the necks of our fellow sufferers; And this is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle in one instance becomes a precedent for a second, that second for a third, and so on 'til the bulk of the society is reduced to be mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering ... And the forehorse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression." Thomas Jefferson

You and the other liberals should decide to pay more and leave the rest of us alone.

That's true, but the founding fathers never imagined we would have a population with so many needs. Over 75% of the economy back then was agriculture (they had slaves to keep things cheap for that) and the only major import was gunpowder. We live in a different world, and taxes are necassary.

I agree totally, I have seen them increase it and add medicare tax, we are paying way to much in state and federal taxes already. The founding fathers would be appalled at what we pay.

And I don't want to have to ask for it. I do not want you to tax me for it either. Also I want you to fund the account.

You need to pay social security because your parents paid social security, and their parents paid social security, now it's getting closer to the time when your parents and grandparents get to reap the benefits of paying all those years of social security, and the fact that you want to take those benefits away from them by not paying yourself is irresponsible. If you want to cut taxes, it shouldn't be by the only income that some senior citizen's have, because they were told that if they paid it their whole lives, they would be taken care of when they were elderly. When the Baby Boomers turn 80 and 90, social security costs will go way down again, and we can lessen the tax burden.
