USS Missouri ready for drydock USS Missouri ready for drydock

Submitted by hepsy | 6 months ago

Honolulu Advertiser - The 887-foot Missouri, the last battleship built by the U.S. and site of Japan's unconditional surrender ending the war, will be headed to drydock.

"The battleship Missouri's tow to drydock will be a rare sight indeed. You just don't see battleships under way anymore."

It will be the first time the "Mighty Mo" will leave her pier in more than 11 years.

All those tunnels built with slave labor. And yet the left wants us to believe getting paid for your work is bad. I often wonder if it would take being shackled and made work like that for them to see.

While I hate their government I have to respect the grasp they have on war. War is not pretty, it is hell. The whole point of a military "is to kill people and break things. Their success is measured in body counts and strategic targets razed." to quote El Rushbo. Now most people confuse what I say with advocating that a Nuclear Weapon be used anytime the military is involved. It isn't, what I advocate is simple. If it's needed, use it. Don't politicize the damn thing. I despise any politician that would put politics ahead of the people who are keeping their ass*s out of chinese or russian gulags.(Not that there's much difference, one you get poodle on a stick the other borscht.)

The public would finally see war casualties that are in a league with WW2 or more, God forbid. And you are right about long and bloody. The thing is they would have no qualms with using nukes, biologics and chemicals not to mention EMPs. Their generals have said they would. They don't fear retailiation because they care not for their people and they plan on the elite being safe in mountain deep tunnels.

No they can't, thank you congress for making our dollar near worthless.

I use to think Battlewagons were phased out because they were not thought cost effective. However I think if you mentioned "cost-effectiveness" to a congressmen they'd probably say "Huh?".

In a war with China as everything stands Military wise, and barring any intervention by foreign powers, we would win. It would be a long bloody war, but we would win. Give The One a year or two more however, and that will change.

They can't build these ships for what they cost originally and to get rid of so many doesn't make sense. It's like they want to spend money for more technology, that in a war of attrition they are unsustainable. China plans on war with us and they have more of everything. They are going to lose 3 or more to one of our planes and ships but they can afford to with their numbers of ships and planes, not to mention people.

Yep, and there's also the fact that, despite what those who argued for their decomissioning said, they also have the advantage over a B-52 in the Nuclear aspect too. A B-52 can only drop the bomb and be gone. An Iowa-class can loiter for days, weeks if resuplyed and rain Katies whenever needed.

The amount of destruction they can rain on a target is only exceeded by a B-52 Superfortress.

If you take into consideration that the B-52 has a weight limit on munitions and is usually based a long distance from the target the Battle ship can deliver destuction over a long period and have very good accuracy compaired to non guided munitions on a B-52.

Well if they don't we can thank clinton. They were working just fine when Bush Sr. had them thundering against saddams troops in Kuwait.

Ahh, the ones built because of steel shortages. I thought you might be talking about the brick USS Indiana they built up in the Great Lakes because they couldn't get the real one(I've heard it refered to as a concrete ship.). SS Atlantus, now is it just me or is that not the most appropriate name for a ship?:)

There will always be a need for these battle wagons. Especially today, those big guns can throw a shell of 1,900 pounds over 20 miles. That is still pretty awesome.

We ll hope her guns didn't suffer the rust of Clinton's era, that they're as well cared for as the ship.

The complete history's fuzzy, but seems a fleet of concrete ships were used to transport troops home after WWI (I think). I had family who lived 1/2 mile from one, SS Atlantus, sunk in Delaware Bay where it almost meets the Atlantic. There were munitions bunkers nearby, used during WWII (and later for parties:)). It's mostly under water now. I don't think the Germans who landed, landed nearby, nor the German submarines that sank close to US, discovered after the War.

The Concrete Ship seemed always an enigma, two quarters (right bow and stern, split) protruding from the water.

I think they know there might well come a time for the Missouri to do what she was built to do, shell our enemies into submission. Yes she has, and very well I might add. But you just can't beat the psychological impact of being shelled by a battleship. Yes they do, and with a namesake like Mighty Mo how could it not? Which ones?

MO has done its duty, and the new sub here is expected to be quite proficient in what an attack sub is supposed to do.
You re familiar with the concrete ships?

You should.

Know of it? Yes, but I've never seen it in person.

Yes, she is an awesome ship. The best land view of her, imho, is from Ford Island. Seems like her arrival to the Island was just last month.

(You know of the Utah Memorial? It's the most humbling of the Harbor memorials. Ford Island is limited access and tour busses don't stop for the Utah.)

btw - posted this for you. Don't expect anyone else to care.
