Here is the problem.
If you are a student of the scriptures and go back to the Greek and Hebrew and other ORIGINAL language version of the earliest manuscripts of the books of the Bible, you will indeed find that the truest and closest and most correct interpretation from these languages into English is the King James Version with some exceptions where even this translation gets some passages wrong...but that is easily discovered IF you study.
The pastor is right about the other versions because there are subtle changes and not so subtle changes in meaning .... that CHANGE creates confusion because it is error and misleads... this the reason for so much theological confusion and disagreement. However, that is EXACTLY why there are 66 books and so many copied versions of the writings help us to determine the actual meaning. For example the Gospel of Matthew has many ancient papyri written in Greek, Spanish, Ethiopia etc.... versions .... and these versions when compared will confirmed the truth. However the Greek is the most precise language ever written, so is difficult for Greek scholars to miss the meaning but mankind have their bias....don't they.
The 66 books of the Bible are written over thousands of years, by many different authors .... yet all of them AGREE in thought. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??? That is humanly impossible and when you STUDY...you come to see that fact and you are able to accept the prophets and Apostles were inspired by the true author that this is absolutely a message from God Almighty to man...and that has to be REVEALED to an individual....so he/she may accept the authority of scripture. That is not discovered by casual reading. The Scriptures are hidden to people who will NEVER come to faith...it is suppose to be but many people accept this on blind faith but I do not have to for I have discovered this truth because I have studied enough.
I think this pastor is WRONG in making this nothing but a controversial headliner adding fuel to the hatred for Christians from a world that will never understand, It makes him look like an idiot ... to burn any book but what do you do with the books you own that you KNOW are in error and misleading people? You cannot pass them on. If he felt that strongly, he should of just destroyed his copies and taught a sermon about it. Error is easily defeated with truth. Christianity is about persuasion not coercion. He would be better off persuading all who want to come and listen ... why he thinks the way he does and expose the errors.
The Gospels declare that there will come a time when people will want their ears tickled and a different gospel will be taught. Rick Warren has some good things to say but his brand of gospel is tickling to the ears and look at his huge congregation that has bought it. This "tickling" time has truly come and pulpits a filled with preachers coming out of seminaries who are "tickling" the ears of man. Don't human beings want things his way and he hates to give up control of his life....so man looks for a purpose driven life when the Bible teaches that it is God's Purposes that we should be studying not mans. Warren elevates man and the Lord is diminished...in my view. I don't know what part of "To find your life you must lose your life" proclaimed in all four Gospels.... that he doesn't understand.
It is the responsibility for every Christian to STUDY scripture and to be led of the Lord to the truth in a personal journey. Most Christians are happy to be fed with three points, a poem, and a little devotion ... little morality plays .... and a "can t we all just get-along-ism" ... when clearly what the Bible teaches that the Gospel is divisive...it separates people from the world. Jesus himself said so but then you have to study to know that....
This pastor (probably was horrified in his discovery of anti-gospel doctrines) .... just wanted to stir up a controversy .... and that solves nothing. You don't "throw pearls before swine (the ungodly world)." Yeah...he will be made to look the fool by the world and receive a severe lesson.
