The police said they don't enforce the commercial law, Must be nice to disregard laws you don't agree with, I can think of quite a few I would like to have disregarded.
She could of been pretending not to understand or didn't have one. To get the license you need to pass certain conditions, to be safe you should be able to read English.

It's silly to suggest disregarding traffic signs because of the exuse of not knowing a language!
Whether the signage is displayed in international Pictures (i.e., image of upside down U with a slash) or old-fashioned English (ie., "No Left Turn") whoever's driving is repsonsible for knowing, and obeying, whateve law is pertinent. As for requiring a driver to "know English," that is a different topic than obeying traffic laws. (You don't know how I feel about some of those rules!)
The subject of the article was charged with three violations: "disregarding a traffic control device (she made an illegal U turn), failure to present a driver's license and non-English speaking driver." The first two violations are legitimate. The third would, apparently, be a legit if she were a commercial driver and the department enforced that (optional) federal law (according to the article).
It appears that the "she didn't understand English" is an excuse to overlook the illegal U turn, and not having her license with her (depending on how Texas law is written).
Maybe she didn't understand English, is in Texas legally, but doesn't want to be a US Citizen and so doesn't need/want to learn English.
Seems a rather poor excuse to overlook a traffic violation.

Seems reasonable to use the language of our founding documents, the language required for those wanting to become American citizens.
It seems rather strange that drivers would be ticked for not speaking English. Might it be a frustrated excuse to address illegal immigrants? I cannot think of an appropriate reason to ticket anyone because he doesn't speak a specific language.
A lot of English as an only language people can't properly speak/write/understand English, are they to be ticked, also?

What bothers me most is many of those illegals support La Raza. They want California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas returned to Mexico. They should get together and try it on Texas, it would solve a good part of the illegal aliens problem.

I personally don't care if they speak English, as long as they UNDERSTAND English. The First Amendment is one of the issues where I wan libertarian. Because if the government can force us to speak English then that would set a precedent for them to force us to speak another language. Like in Chicago where third graders were made learn Chinese. I have no qualms with people learning other languages, I myself speak a few, but I have problems with FORCING citizens to learn new languages.
I do, however, think legislation should be passed so that government business is conducted in English.

How on Earth does having an ATM with two languages bother or affect you??
People who speak Spanish generally get by with minimal English, if they choose to not learn English. This decision may relegate them to certain jobs, and if they are fine with it, then so be it. If private institutions, such as banks, restaurants, etc. decide that it is in their interest to have bilingual menus or whatever, then so be it.
Mind you, I am not advocating for the state to force anyone to speak or learn other languages. I'm against the state forcing people to learn ANY language, including English. I support the abolition of the welfare state - that should not be used to make people behave in any particular way.

Near me there is a pork packing plant and several years ago they advertised for a plant nurse. I read it and it said must speak Spanish. I live more than 1,000 miles from Mexico and to get that job I'm supposed to speak Spanish? Everyone around here speaks English.
I don't think the Declaration of Independence or Constitution has Spanish on the back. Ask your fiancee's grandpa if the phone ever prompted for Polish, if the ATM gave a option for Polish.Ask if the drivers license people had a test in Polish for them. His parents tried to learn English if they spoke any at all.
The majority of people that speak Spanish only are illegal. The La Raza movement and big Sinco de Mayo celebrations are hardly patriotic. They are resisting melding into Americans.

And it is still happening. Do you think that any given person in the United States in, say, 1909, spoke English? Of course not. Many immigrants moved here and never learned English. They did just fine. In the main, their children learned English AND the language of the old country.
I don't have any examples from my family because they were all from England or Ireland. However, my fiancee's grandpa (who is a great guy, btw) speaks English and Polish. It is my understanding that his parents did not speak much English at all. They were Polish immigrants.

For 200 years LEGAL immigrants learned English without all the benefits Spanish speakers are getting, they wanted to learn English to better themselves. This is how our society integrated them into the mainstream. Officially or not English is the language of our country.

What the hell are you talking about? People work in the U.S., earn money here, live here, and do not speak English. How is this not being a part of society?
For the same reason that people should not be forced to have health insurance or pay for others' health insurance, no one should be forced to speak a language. If a person cannot survive (find and keep a job, etc.) because they do not speak the dominant language, they will adapt. However, if they can survive and get by, what crime are they committing by living here and only speaking Spanish?

If they can't speak English the odds are they can't read it and shouldn't be driving. They also say they don't enforce the law against commercial drivers which is what the law is for. So now the police have the choice to enforce laws or not. I want the same option on obeying them.
You are right about English as the official language, we are bending over backwards to allow them to keep speaking Spanish without the need to learn English and it should stop. They will hardly ever melt into our society not speaking English.

When I first saw this I thought that once again, Texas has it right. I then saw that they will probably fire these cops for dereliction of duty. Too bad.
***BTW, I am not applauding the cops for ticketing Mexicans, I am going for the "English for the official language" side of the argument.***
