Yes - but pulling ONE QUOTE out of a conversation about service and the military and injecting ones own context into it isn't entirely an accurate depiction. The Congressman from Georgia should be representing his constituents and asking this question of the President-Elect, not comparing him to Hitler to make a damn headline.
Actions taken under the guise of the USA Patriot Act are also subject to judicial review. The controversial National Security Letters can be challenged. (This only came about after the Patriot act was revised and re-adopted). Independent judicial review kind of puts a dampener on the whole secret police thing.
Don't get me wrong.. not defending Obama on this issue. But I do believe he deserves a fair shake (even if he wasn't willing to give one to President Bush). I agree - we won't know exactly what he meant until he clarifies.
I posted my comments because I'm sick of the damn political shock-and-awe in lieu of actually tackling the issues.

The speech is on you tube. The article QUOTES him accurately. Given the powers that the executive branch now has thanks to the patriot act, this sort of thing could turn into a secret police force. Not that I'm implying that it is his intention to do so.
Until we answer the questions I've asked in previous posts, all our ranting is speculation.

Folks - check out the facts instead of jumping to generalizations based on an article or a sound-byte. I think this article is a gross contortion of what Obama said in the actual speech. Obama is big on Service. He wants people to know that they can serve in other ways besides just the military. He proposed expanding foreign service orgs such as the peace corps, americorps, etc and having them work closely alongside the military in a diplomatic and support sense (his explanations are vague at best, but clearly point to civilians working in the foreign service).
That is something I can respect. This article makes it seem as though the President-Elect is mobilizing a secret police force to come take everyones guns... and it seems that is just out of context of what Obama actually said(or meant).
That having been said, Obama also wants to make community service mandatory for high school/middle school/college students. I'm all for people becoming part of the solution to the problems we face today... but I see this mandatory service requirement as a subtle erosion of liberty as well as his further proposed federal regulation of nonprofits.

Stop! take a deep breath. I agree that Obama needs collective support, as any President does, as Americans we should support our President or at least respect the office, keeping partisan diferences from clouding sound policy decisions.
I am still waiting however for someone to explain to me WTF a "civilian national security force just as well trained and funded as the military" is.
In typical leftwing playbook fashion, we are now talking about Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh rather than providing substantive answers to objective questions that are clearly worded, let me ask again: WHAT IS A CIVILIAN NATIONAL SECURITY FORCE? WHY DO WE NEED ONE?
Break for hydration and snacks.
Okay, I'll wait for an answer, don't know if I'll get one but I'll wait

I fear nothing. It's just that I know the difference between a republic and a police state.
If you don't fear anything, then you haven't been listening to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity close enough. They did their best during the election to convince you that an Obama victory would bring -
- attacks from Al Queda
- socialist/marxist policies
- higher taxes if you earn more than $40,000 per year
- various problems, apparently arising from his board level relationship with William Ayres. (though I am not really sure what problems they thought would come along.)
It's time to give the Obama adminstration a year or two of collective, honest support, and see what they can do with it.
I cannot remember a U.S. president (post-WWII) having such worldwide support.
And given the problems facing the country today (in particular, two ongoing wars and a world financial crises) - it will take a world response and the ccoperation of many countries to solve these problems.
That is why Bush was precisely the wrong person to have been in charge. He is uniformly hated around the world, and is a symbol of U.S arragance. You probably won't see him do any international travel after he leaves office. Or travel outside of Texas, for that matter.

Can we answer the accusation with facts or is this sidestepping double speaking use of semantics all we have to look forward to? Obama said "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama HAS NOT TAKEN OFFICE, so his comment is in relation to current national security objectives and NOT some imaginary peace corps on steroids. The media needs to focus on what Obama meant so that this kind of speculation can be confirmed or dis-qualified.

This is typical liberal response. Nothing on Dobb, Frank or Obama and the housing crisis??
Views may be differnet but people listed care about this country. They are some of the few who don't lie to you. I have heard about Sarah and the intelect but brother it is the common sense that is missing. She was only chance for this country to have real government reform. Didn't say it was my first choice just the only choice.
Now you'll get your change. Starting day one it is Obamas gig. So I don't want anymore George Bush excuses. 9-11 was Bush's deal Bush's fault. Had nothing to do with Clinton not taking out enemy number one when he had lots of chances.
Economy is in free fall that is Obama and his lib thugs that caused that so when is the Change King going to admit that.
I KNOW

Right, wedge issues. Tell that to people who give a damn about the second amendment or the economy. Or CA voters for that matter.
I believe the GOP was founded upon a wedge issue, but no one is complaining about it these days.

How is your search for a new leader going? I saw that you reference (Ron) Paul, (Ross) Perot, Sarah Palin (really?), and Bobby Jindel.
I would be fully on board for considering your first two picks in 2012 (Ron Paul) and (Ross Perot); but I think their best-before dates will have passed by then. And they are really not angry enough to bring the party together. But both are entertaining and are straight-shooters, I'll give you that.
Sarah Palin needs to go back to school for a while to improve her credentials - perhaps take some classes in geography, history and science. You know - some good old fashioned book learnin' to go along with her knock-out legs.
And Bobby Jindel ? I don't know much about him, but I would be willing to listen to him and evaluate him fairly. If he talks more about how he can help the lives of typical Americans, and less on the wedge issues (such as guns, gay marriage and immigration), then he will have my attention and the attention of alot of other people who chose to vote as a democrat this cycle.
My friend - when you see the hundreds of thousands of people attend Obama events, and read the accolades that pour in from around the world; and see the hope in people's faces for a better world ahead - i.e. - the absolute cheering that has gone on in so many parts of the world since the election.
One has to stop and think that --
It is morning in America again.

Red get a grip. It was posted on his site and said nothing about what you are referring. Every time someone questions his policy it changes or disappears.
It is obvious to rational people that this guy is no different than any other politician except to his socialist ideals. It can't be argued or disputed. Look at his cabinet and his VP choice. More of the McSame. Even Madow can say it Red. Your cousin Bill Clinton came out and said he warned his fellow libs that they were gonna collapse the housing industry and you and Obama cannot come out and admit it like he said he would.
If Obama was the "CHANGE" you fools voted for he would of already come out and ask for Dobbs and franks removal but will NOT because he is not the change us true Patriots are looking for.
We are looking for "people with a government" not a "government with people". We are looking for sound policy not symbolism.
We are looking for someone like Paul, Perot, Palin, Jindel or anyone who will tell us the truth. Than and only than will be one country. UNITED>
Not now when liberals are selling, taxes, distribution of wealth, fairness doctrine, child service, Global warming(cap & trade), energy indpendance and a whole host of other lies most of which are crimes against the American people. It is called treason Red.
Two predictions for 2009. Obama will come on tv and announce that Bush and Republican policy has us in termoil and the situation is waorse than expected. tax plan will expand and we will be asked to sacrafice. The second is that Obama will get peace agreemnet sighned in Israeland it will be game on brother.
when you grow up you will be a republican or Independent. right now your in fantasy land

You need a big imagination to become fearful of the program that Obama mentioned, at least based on the details disclosed to date.
The neocons were the truly the masters of fear over the last 10 years or so.
Think about it -
you should be 'afraid' of Obama's policies;
you should be 'afraid' of Al Queda coming to your neighborhood;
you should be 'afraid' of Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction;
you should be 'afraid' of having your gun taking away; etc. etc etc
The people on the far right seems to think that fear is the best way to communicate, and motiviate, the general public at large.
Don't tell me you're trying to get people afraid of the Obama National service program, are you?
Take a chill pill, and wait for the details to come out.

Ugh! I wish Mr. Congressman here did some work before he opened his mouth. Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado in which he called for expanding the nation's foreign service. That is, our country's anemic diplomatic service which does not have enough people or training or resources to work in reconstruction efforts in countries that we have bombed!
Pleaasee! Can somebody put this guy in a room and make him read the small print before he gets near the microphone. I believe Bush 2 has just asked for funding for a civilian corps, which I presume would be useful overseas and domestically, if god forbid, we get another Katrina-like event.
mcnabb (Independent) - 13 months ago
A civilian national security force? Just as strong and well funded as the military? WTF? All citizens of this country should be demanding to know just what he is talking about! Passing this off as "a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure", IS NOT RELATED TO ANY NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE!! Should the AP be demanding answers from Obama or just go on painting this Congressman as an imbecile? What national security issues are we facing Mr. Obama, that would require such a large and expensive civilian national security force? What is a civilian national security force, and if it's meant to be a humanitarian assistance group why call it a SECURITY FORCE emphasis on FORCE!!?? Before we start calling for the congressman's head, maybe we should answer the questions.
