I visited Montreal many years ago, in the 70s, and thought it was great. But I was back just a year ago and the place seemed to have gone downhill, to a tourist anyway. The old spirit I remembered seemed to have been overtaken with a sense of struggle, and more frowns than smiles when I spoke English.

Too bad. It seemed like a real world city back in the day.

This "Bye Bye" New Year's Eve special has long suffered from a sin much worse than racism - it is rarely funny, to its Quebecois(e) audience or others.

When it gets it right it can be very funny - like Saturday Night Live - but having followed it over the years it has become the sad reflection of the decayed Quebec culture, it's vulgarity (in the sense of common) just a lingering echo from a place once shining with progressive, if provocative, arts and entertainment.

That it's funded with public money is not the point. Failing in its central task, to make us laugh, is. Au revoir.
