Obama era expected to end taboo on gays in US military Obama era expected to end taboo on gays in US military

Submitted by MsLiberty | 1 year ago

Yahoo - Sixteen years after Bill Clinton tried to end restrictions on gays in the military, the US armed forces under Barack Obama may be forced to give homosexuals the same welcome as non-gays.

Under president Clinton, the policy that once saw homosexuals discharged from US military service evolved to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," allowing gays to remain in the military so long as they did not reveal their sexual orientation.

Obama has pledged to overhaul current law.

That's a good start, but Obama needs to also address the far more important issue - the fact that our military should not be policing the world but should instead be defending our borders.

I don't like celery. Others like it, and express their preference openly, even brazenly. Laws protect my right not to eat it and their right to enjoy it, in public even, no matter how inconceivable (and, frankly, wrong) that seems to me.

If we're going to achieve equality in the military by pointing out that we need them and their skills as a matter of numbers, rather than through some more principled discourse, I guess that's better than not getting there at all.

It's more than a little disheartening, though, in our country founded on certain self-evident truths.
