First Afghan woman mayor says women's rights worsened First Afghan woman mayor says women's rights worsened

Submitted by Dancing Queen | 11 months ago

Reuters - Afghanistan's first woman mayor is determined to improve one of the country's newest and poorest provinces, but she is concerned women's rights in the former Taliban state are getting worse.

"I was very happy to get this job, especially being the first woman to be a mayor in Afghanistan, but there are some men who think a woman couldn't do this job," Azra Jafari told Reuters.

"Unfortunately, Afghan society has not yet become a society which can accept that women are able to do this job, like any other person."

Are there no easy questions? Probably not. You're right, I think, equality does not mean sameness.

I don't know whether we're imposing our American values, or offering a choice of glasses through which to see oneself, one's neighborhood, one's country.

If Afghanistan was the big, powerful place you describe and came to little America, it would bring a different pair of glasses. We would, hopefully, be able to try before deciding to buy. Maybe we would not like the difference and immediately discard them, maybe we would take the time to honestly evaluate. Maybe the new glasses can be combined with the old, to make ones.

This is how I see the women of Afghanistan. They've been presented a different pair of glasses. The glasses are: totally inappropriate; they don't fit properly and need adjusting; just need getting used to; or the old needs to be combined with the new, for a proper fit. Only the women of Afghanistan can know which to choose. They will. We always do.

Hmmm.

It's hard for us to believe that our own values are not the best, or that our arts are not the most beautiful.

As we undertake these overseas adventures, are we just imposing our American values on cultures which are simply different? Is it a universal truth that women should be treated equally with men, everywhere and all the time?

I don't know. I'd like to think so, but I'm not sure.

What if Afghanistan were a big, powerful country and occupied a small, weak place called America and supported (or even managed to institute) rules to the effect that only men could be lawmakers?

Would that go over well? Would we claim our culture, our traditions, our ethics, were under siege?

Or if San Francisco occupied Oklahoma City, legalized gay marriages there and then built a big shrine to them?

Everything is relative. Or maybe not. Or maybe "equality" does not mean sameness. The bible says the sexes have different roles to play.

Are there no easy questions??

When you have a country where all government officials are corrupt including the President's brother, it is not hard to see stories like this one. If it weren't for Pakistan, Afghanistan would be the #1 Suck a*s country.
