Andra Gillespie on the new RNC chair

Submitted by Political Ninja | 1 year ago

Politico - The selection of Michael Steele as the new RNC chair is the best possible outcome for the Republican Party. The GOP faces numerous challenges at this juncture. It must emerge from the shadow of a failed Republican administration. It must craft a new message that resonates with voters who have negative impressions of the Republican Party. It must heal ideological rifts within its own ranks. And it must respond to the reality of an increasingly diverse electorate and the fact that most people of color identify with the Democratic Party.

On all of these dimensions, Steele stood head and shoulders above his competitors, who were either too identified with the Bush Administration, considered too divisive, or who unfortunately framed themselves in racially unflattering ways.

In my upcoming edited volume, Whose Black Politics? Cases in Post-Racial Black Leadership, my colleagues and I explore the implications of the rise of post-civil rights black politicians for American politics and African American politics. One of my main goals as editor was to use the various case studies to demonstrate that the wonderful diversity represented in African American public opinion and policy preferences manifests itself among young African American politicians.
