Police removal of ID numbers Police removal of ID numbers "unacceptable"

Submitted by johngalt | 12 months ago

Guardian - Chief inspector of constabulary tells MPs that removal of police ID numbers during protests must stop, after G20 complaints. The chief inspector of constabulary said: "It is utterly unacceptable to be not wearing their numerals. I am very concerned with that issue. I firmly hope that will be rectified with some certainty ... I would expect people in public order and other situations to wear their numbers ... it acts as a good check and balance."

So you think it is OK for cops to cover their names and numbers to torment people in an illegal fashion? Are you crazy?

The numbers are there to identify cops, so there is a sense of accountability and a check on their power when they engage the public. When they remove or cover their numbers it eliminates that accountability. It allows them to engage in actions unbecoming of a police officer, actions that are illegal and brutal.

The Chief Inspector is right to stand against the actions of officers trying to misuse their authority.

As long as the police are doing there job it is fine. We would expect them too, What are these numbers used for other then identification? People who complain of that are just being annoying. It is like saying "flip your collar down!" but who does that... How is the public supposed to know about the numbers. The Cheif Inspector is a nub as far as I am concerned. There are the ones doing the work so they should have some input on the situation.

For the older people on this website Nub means noob or newbie. A common phrase explaining an unexpierenced person.

Regards, James
