Is it Better to be Feared or Loved? Is it Better to be Feared or Loved?

Visit C Rich's Blog | 11 months ago

The question whether it was better to be feared or loved was put forth in Robert DeNiro’s directorial debut The Bronx Tale between the two main characters of the movie. This question could be posed in reference to America’s foreign policy under the leadership of our latest president. President B. Hussein Obama has brought forth the change he promised in the area of foreign policy. The change is a humble and an apologetic posture to the rest of the world and our so-called enemies.

He wants to be loved. He is in that category of people who shy away from confrontation and just simply wants the world to love us. We heard this mantra many times during the Bush years. People kept saying that the world hates us and it was all Bush’s fault. That we lost ...

it seems to me that it should not be about fear and love but about respect, authority and disrespect. People who respect your authority are more inclined to be trusted followers. My view is that Obama is trying to restore respect in the US leadership. Eventually fear disappears and what is left? mostly anger and hatred. I am always amazed when people refer to Machiavelli to analyze contemporary settings. No need to theorize something that is just plain common sense.

Well, even though one of my beliefs are that (people fearing me=power!), and I've seen some good examples of it, I think a little love won't hurt

Machiavelli first posed this question in "The Prince" and he said, "The answer is of course, that it is best to be both loved and feared." He did state later that if there had to be a choice made (as often there is? it is better to be feared than loved. I think the Obama administration does understand the importance of being both feared and loved, and is using both, but is using it kind of backward. He should be making the rest of the world have a quiet, respectful type of fear of him (not so much the terror that people had of Bush, so much, a little different here), and the American people should feel loved. Instead, Obama sends money to Pakistan, bows to Saudis, and threatens bloggers and the media with harsh social stigma if they go against him and wants to create a guilt-ridden forced American people. He's beloved by the wrong guy, and scaring the wrong guy. He's got it flipped. I don't like most of the things Bush did, but Bush during the few days after 9/11 is the way to do the feared and loved at the same time thing properly. I think even the most leftist among us can remember how loved we felt and how much we loved eachother and even him (because he made them scared) when he said, "But I can hear you. And the rest of the world will hear you too." (I apologize if this quote and the one above is not exact, they are from memory, and memory can get hazy).

Awesome post! Bring us more of that, please! Great reading.
