Is Benedict XVI social encyclical left or right? Reading the international press in the aftermath of its publication, you might think it is rather ... left! These categories are caricatures, but the italian daily newspaper La Repubblica, much to the left, applauds the "Catholic socialism" of the text and the New York Times observes that, in this document, Benedict XVI mimics a European socialist of the old school. In particular, insists the American newspaper, in its support for "unions" and "Role of the State".
