padokc,

I’ve never said France, Japan or Australia has the best health care. I wrote “France, Japan and Australia rated best and the United States worst in rankings focusing on preventable deaths due to treatable conditions in 19 leading industrialized nations in 2008. If the U.S. health care system performed as well as those of those top three countries, there would be 101,000 fewer deaths in the United States per year, according to researchers writing in the journal Health Affairs.” My source: http://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/content/abstract/27/1/58 (sorry, the whole article isn’t available online but I am sure you can order a copy if you are interested).

My point wasn’t to defend other health care systems but to express my disagreement with the crazy guy on the video who claims “we (Americans)’ve got the best health care system in the world.”

I am sure you can find horrible stories like yours in every country in the world – France and Australia included.

I’m French (and not necessarily proud of it). I am currently living in Paris. I spent four wonderful years in the US. My son was born in Maryland. Few months after his birth, my son was diagnosed with a severe deformation of the skull called plagiocephaly. Specialists immediately outfitted my son with a corrective helmet to realign his skull and prevent permanent facial deformities, along with hearing, vision and eventually mental problems. When we submitted the $3,500 bill to the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland, we received a letter informing us that they considered the helmet being a cosmetic accessory and we would not receive anything from them. During more than two years, I called Blue Cross Blue Shield every other week, I wrote hundreds of emails, I have been treated like s**t by people talking about my son’s deformation like it was nothing. Finally, because I was patient, educated and rich enough, BCBS agreed to reimburse less than half the total cost of the treatment.

People who are saying that healthcare in France is free are liars. Healthcare is paid by taxes. It’s accessible to everybody. Everybody in France has to have health insurance. If you can't afford it, the government helps you pay for it. If you lose your job, you don't lose your health insurance. If you lose your job and you are diagnosed by cancer, you aren’t obliged to die slowly and painfully just because you don’t want your family to be obliged to pay your debt after your death. The system is based on solidarity. (http://edition.cnn.com/HEALTH/blogs/paging.dr.gupta/2008/02/health-care-french-way.html)

Japan, Australia and France were on top of the list for “Healthy Life Expectancy” in the world (1997-1999). The US ranked #24, between Israel and Cyprus. For “Health system attainment and performance” (1997), France ranked #4, Japan #9 and the US #72 (between Argentina and Bhutan). For Total Health Expenditures as % of GDP (2002-2005), the US ranked #1 with 22% of GDP, France was 10 with 9.6% of GDP. You can find all the details of these surveys on the World Health Organization website.

Finally, I am glad your friend is ok now. But I am not surprised the Japanese government wants to increase taxes for overweight people if their healthcare system is based on solidarity too. It works the same with the private system in the US: if you are a smoker, you pay more because you have more chance to die than somebody who doesn’t smoke. I know the majority of people think it’s ok to be overweight but you are the dumbest person in the world if you are a smoker. Personally, I don’t see the difference.

My friend is a left leaning moderate. I am more conservative.

This is just her 20 year experience with Japanese government medicine. She adopted two Chinese female orphans (she is single, never been married .... and in her mid forties). They have pediatricians here in OKC who assist her long distance quite a lot.

Anecdotal stories like this are much better for me because it is what it is and not sponsored by some agenda. But people just want to believe what they think regardless often of the evidence right under their noses.

When we have Congressional hearing we hear quite a lot of anecdotal evidence presented .... do we not?

She was lured to the Japanese medical services at first because it was "free" and she was into holistic medicine including many oriental forms of unconventional treatment ....until she really got sick. Her experience was in a major hospital so I can imagine how the poe folks are treated.

I always say ...."Nothing is free and what is free stuff ain t much good for nothin' because it has LITTLE VALUE."

That is the point.

Yes, her American doctors discovered her ailment -- running a few of those expensive tests --- and found her problem in short order .... a problem which was misdiagnosed ... she got treatment and fully recovered in short time. A lesson well learned.

Oh, and by the way. The government is now weighing in all of the professors and beginning a program that will dock her pay if she doesn't lose 30 pounds by next year. After all, it is for her own good, isn't it?

How would you like to weigh in everyday you clock into work and supervise what you put in your mouth?

After all government knows best...in this part of the world.

She is yearning to return to the USA. Wonder why?

Pete can defend himself. I'll just say that argument from anecdote is valid but of only limited weight in any debate.

Otherwise I could point to a thread in which a confirmed conservative parried with a moderate and came to agree he was wrong in his views and that the moderate position was more sensible, then conclude that all conservative views must be thoughtless.

That argument makes no sense to me, but if you're persuaded then be sure to spread the word.

In any event I'm glad your friend was healed.

Pierre,

You need to qualify your sources.

Who says? Anyone with any education knows that statistics and polls can be bent to any outcome that is why sourcing is so important when entering a debate. Please post "who says France and Japan and Austrialia have the best health care and what is the basis for that opinion?"

One of my best friends has lived in Japan for 20 years. She has encountered the government health care in Japan.

Did you know that if you are in a "free" hospital in Japan your family have to bring you meals or you will starve. That is the Japanese way. Did you know that? She didn t have family there and had a great deal of difficulty getting friends to bring her three squares a day. And by the way...she had to wait I think it was 6 months to get the treatment she desperately needed and suffered greatly because her condition worsened. (In hind sight she should have come back to the US.) After that experience, she flies home every 6 months for medical check ups and dental .... she does not trust Japanese health care or their doctors .... When she needs it her American doctors puts a rush on everything to accommodate her. That expedited service would never happen in Japan.

She is teaching English and religion/humanities in the university there and is top paid professor but the lion's share goes to taxes....and one reason she hasn't moved back to the USA. She writes and speaks fluent Japanese and makes a huge salary...but it takes all her pay to get American health care because she has to come thousands of miles to get good care but it is worth it to her. By the way. Her Japanese stay in the hospital didn t get her well...she had to come here eventually and was well in short time.

I think she knows a thing or two about this.

What are your sources?

Look peeair, you just keep fighting the good gay paris fight. Your stats come straight off the george soros - moveon.org scare tactics, and they won't fly here.

When you are 60 and longer a contributing member of the french society, they will cart your dumb a*s off to the corner of the state ward and hook you up to the car batteries until you pass onto your final demise.

The majority of Americans do not want the government, who breaks everything they get their filthy hands on, running the health care!

BTW, go look up the true meaning of "socialist" so you don't sound so stupid.

1) Not "everybody who disagrees with Barack Obama", everybody who's trying spread misinformation.

2) Good for you if you don’t want “government-mandated health care” but what do you mean by “we’ve got the best health care system in the world?” France, Japan and Australia rated best and the United States worst in rankings focusing on preventable deaths due to treatable conditions in 19 leading industrialized nations in 2008. If the U.S. health care system performed as well as those of those top three countries, there would be 101,000 fewer deaths in the United States per year, according to researchers writing in the journal Health Affairs. Right now, about 47 million people in the US lack any type of health insurance. If they are sick: they die.

3) I really like your video. You look so smart and you sound so articulate. And most of all, you don’t caricature things using “socialist” or “facist” all the time like other conservatives do.
