Wild Asian Jumping Carp On Illinois River

Submitted by Good Ole Boy | 5 months ago

Asian Silver Carp have infested the Illinois River. The fish are migrating up the Mississippi River and can't be stopped. This video is pretty wild. They have decimated the native shad and the effect on game fish is unknown but doesn't look good.

Those are some jumping fish!
Invasive species are such a nuisance! When they're intentionally introduced it seems it's either avarice, or carelessness. Is this one of the species imported to remove algae in the Great Lakes, and found their way to the Illinois? Or was it brought in for sport fishing?
So many of the great ideas to bring in some exotic wildlife to combat another problem produce worse situations than they are intended to cure.
(Rather like some creations of government.)

These buggers can weigh up to 15 lbs in the jumping phase. I have seen them reach heights of 8ft or more and cover 15-20 ft before landing. The bigger ones don t jump but can reach 120lbs many 20-70lbs are caught by the ton by commercial fishermen, bigger than 70lbs they blow through the nets. They lay several million eggs 3 times a year. They grow extremely fast and become too big for feed for predator fish. So you see the problem.
