There are a couple ways to go with land ownership issues.
When the (legitimate) queen of Hawaii was overthrown, her land (inappropriate to compare with dictators like Marcos) was not confiscated (a fact later upheld in court). She willed the land in trust for the children of Hawaii. The trustees lived a life of grandeur, and were ousted several years ago. Kamehameha Schools, a private school with enrollment requirements, has been in the news because it is exclusive. Land issues have been brought up because land owned by the trust is lease, belonging to the trust and so, the children of Hawaii.

There is a movement regarding Hawaii Sovereignty (nothing like what the states are going for now), which the Akaka bill is an attempt to assuage, or stir. (That is a fiasco in itself, so convoluted.) Like the Akaka bill, it seeks to divide the people of Hawaii, including descendants of old Hawaii alii (royalty).

Colorado already messed up Wyoming and Montana in the process. Oregon nearly full of them along with Washington. In many of those states California is followed or preceeded by profanity. There is actual venom involved. Libs will someday be strung up out there.

If you put too much emphasis on that v, you ll sound like a Chattanoogan putting together a sentence with a Georgian briar and Jerseyan water trying to sound like a Texan. :-o) The stress isn t on the w which is soft, rather blended with the ai, (wai) that produces what you re hearing as a v.
Just pronounce Honolulu without A's and you'll be impressive enough :)

Interesting, your second paragraph describes a bit how old Hawaiians tended land. It's too long to go into detail here, but they'd live on the ahupuaa (wedge of land from mountain to ocean) until it was stripped, then move on to another. Had a bit to do with gods. (Oldest Hawaiians had one god.) Common people could be put to death for walking on land without permission, or crossing the shadow of alii, or...

My mountains (Koolau) are still magnificent, the ridges on Kaneohe side sharp, young enough that the foliage doesn't hide them.

Hawaii politics is maddening. Most of the jobs here are either federal/military or state (union), private business gets slaughtered. And there's the push to make us racially divided. :(

July 1 Hawaii became the highest taxed state in the Union. Our legislators also gave themselves a juicy raise, union clout waylaid the governor's furlough, so workers can instead be laid off and collect unemployment. (Never mind that they want to work.) The median cost of a home here is $600,000, the "highest in the known universe," according to a top local economist. And our Health Care...

This video addresses making race an issue, dividing Hawaii, as is being pushed by our Senator. As I recall, last year Obama made a comment in support of Akaka's bill. Maybe creating racial tension here is an aim?
Divided, we fall.

Havai-ee (I gather that that is the correct pronunciation from watching the video. Now, I shall pronounce it in that manner for the rest of my days and drive everyone around me nuckin' futs in the process, LOL - Thank you, Hepsy :] ) is a mess: too many Leftists.

Anywhere there are too many Leftists becomes a mess. They screw up a place, and once it's completely ruined they leave it ... because they have completely ruined it ... and emigrate to another, pristine place ... then ruin that, too ... then emigrate again ... like some giant plague of whiny locusts swarming from place to place and consumming all before them, leaving a reeking cloud of second-hand pot smoke in their wake.

When you hear that distant buzzing sound that whispers, "Duuuuuuuuuuude!" in the distance: run! That will be the swarm coming.

California is just razor stubble now ... even the mountains are worn down into stubs ... the rest of us are just waiting for the great eartquake that will dump us into the Pacific and put us out of our misery ...

I see, according to Hepsy they have really high taxes and demos in charge of the government.. They just need to get rid of the demos. A sure bet for a Fudged up state, like Illinois. They just hiked up the taxes on soda beer, liquor, candy, and medicated soap, shampoo, skin lotion and other things medicated. We are at the top in taxes.
