Multiple Week Look at Tax-Payer Confidence

Visit Zata3's Blog | 11 months ago

We're launching a new round of our survey's today, so we'll have fresh results soon.  For now, take a look at the trends we've found so far when we ask, "Approximately what percentage of the federal budget would you say is spent on worthwhile projects and services?"  These are the weeks of March 16, March 30, and April 13:

What % of your taxes are spent wisely?

Of note is how close the different ethnicities are to one another.  Also, Mexican-Americans showed the most dramatic change from March 30 to April 13.

We'd love to hear your thoughts or observations, and please stay tuned for new results coming soon!

About the Survey - These ZataPulse surveys were conducted with random nation-wide samples of 500 registered voters in each of the ethnicities noted.   The margin of error is 4.4% at a 95% confidence interval.  The survey waves  were about 14 days apart. Survey results are weighted by income quintiles based on 2006 US Census voter turnout estimates but are not  weighted by gender or vote frequency. The responses for the first question are weighted averages of the two digit responses from the voters’ key pad entries.

For More Information - Detailed survey results  and explanation of survey methodology are availlable at www.zata3.com.  You will find tabulations for each ethnicity  by income strata and comparisons with results from previous survey waves.

We carefully worded this quesion to generate a "cynicism index" over the course of the year. The question is purposefully broad as we wanted respondents to give us a top of mind answer rather than analyze in depth the pros and cons of various defense spending, social safety net programs, etc. , Our objective is to measure the changes over the course of the year by ethnicity and income level. We dont suggest people drill down to one specific week of data but rather to view this "cyncism index" over time. The same is true for the other four questions. Comparisions of trends by ethnicity and differences by income level will provide insights.

The results to me are irrelevant... why? Because the question is not one that can bear any reliable results. The question posed was; 'Approximately what percentage of the federal budget would you say is spent on worthwhile projects and services' or as it is on the graph 'What % of your taxes are spent wisely'.

The mere idea of worthwhile projects and services is completely relative to ones views of that which is or is not a worthwhile project and service. People do not think the same projects and services are worthwhile. The question is entirely vague and worthless in seeking any usable results since there is no define measurement to gauge. The responses might as well be random numbers.

Also... how many people polled have any concept of the size, scope or scale of the federal budget in order to make an accurate percentage guess or estimate? I'd presume the number is very low.
