I understand why a president serving a term is hard to beat because of popularity but why is it practically impossible? How and why are the primaries
different for the party of a sitting president?

This is the crucial sentence here: “Every incumbent president for four-plus decades who has faced a serious primary opponent was weakened enough to ultimately lose reelection”

On top of that, Trump was not just sitting back, his arms crossed, during all this time. He has solidified his control over the party, not allowing a serious contender to emerge.
