CNN: Mulvaney brashly admits quid pro quo over Ukraine vs Fox News: Mulvaney comments seized on by critics
There is very little you will understand about the impeachment inquiry, especially if you are an independent like me. What I do understand is that our democracy is under threat, because our main networks do not care about truth, or education their readers, but only about partisanship.
Since the beginning of this impeachment inquiry, quid pro quo has been in the limelight. Rightfully so, because proving quid pro quo would mean that the president was abusing his presidential powers for personal gain.
According to CNN article, WH acting chief of staff Mulvaney admitted that there was quid pro quo by saying that “President Donald Trump froze nearly $400 million in US security aid to Ukraine in part to pressure that country into investigating Democrats”. On the other hand, Fox News article points out that Trump’s concerns about Ukraine corruption were more general:"This is a corrupt place. Everyone knows this is a corrupt place … Plus, I’m not sure that the other European countries are helping them out either.” Therefore, it is normal for the president to be concerned about how Ukraine is using his aid.
The key to all of this is that for quid pro quo to be established, it is necessary that the president was asking the foreign power to interfere in US elections, by offering something of value. In this case, even though Biden investigation was Trump’s primary request, some parts of the transcripts suggest that he was talking about corruption in Ukraine in general.
