CNN: Trump's rare retreat on his brand vs Fox News: Trump made the right move by cancelling Doral resort plans
Let’s face it…Whatever President Trump does tops our national news headlines (mostly in a negative way). The man could even make his bowel habits top news headline. It is not difficult to see that this “shock and run” strategy suits him, because by trolling our national media, he is diverting their attention from more serious issues, impeachment inquiry in the first place.
As we all know, Mulvaney announced a couple of days ago that June’s G7 summit will be held at Trump’s Doral resort which he described as “the best facility possible”. Our national media, of course, went berserk, describing the move as “taking self-dealing to new levels”; “putting revenue into Trump’s pockets” or “the most brazen corruption crime you can imagine”. Trump eventually backed down, blaming it on the media.
According to CNN’s John King, Trump’s decision to back down following criticism is connected with the impeachment inquiry and growing disagreement within the Republican Party. In other words, he is trying to keep the team together. CNN points out that the President is abusing power for his own interests.
On the other hand, Fox News is trying to downplay Trump’s idea of hosting G7 at his Doral resort and laugh it off as his typical trolling. They interviewed Huckabee , according to whom Trump made the right decision because: " The president is a fighter. He fights the right fight. Sometimes you just say, ‘This fight isn’t worth the trouble. Let me use my energy to fight something that matters to the American people.’” Huckabee also pointed out that Trump does not need revenue from a G7 summit, and that his brand is already strong enough.
If we look at the issue independently, the timing of Trump’s announcement that he would host a G7 summit at his Doral resort is very strange. He is already facing a lot of criticism over impeachment and Syria. As Huckabee said, his plate is already full. Therefore, we can suspect that he really is trolling the media and trying to divert their attention from more serious accusations. Furthermore, it is possible that he is using this little incident as a litmus paper for GOP’s loyalty. Nevertheless, Fox News is wrong to say that Trump had nothing to gain from hosting a G7 summit at his resort. His personal brand might be strong, but the brand of Doral resort is not (its net operating income has declined by 70% since 2015 https://www.vox.com/2019/10/17/20919414/trump-g7-doral-resort-2020-mulvaney ).
