Did Pelosi say that it is dangerous to let the voters decide Trump's fate?
I have been reading a lot about Pelosi allegedly saying that “it is dangerous to let the voters decide Trump’s fate”.
This is what Trump tweeted: 'Nancy Pelosi just stated that ‘it is dangerous to let the voters decide Trump’s fate.’ @FoxNews In other words, she thinks I’m going to win and doesn’t want to take a chance on letting the voters decide"
The problem- he was not quoting Pelosi but Fox News reporter who was attempting to summarize what Pelosi said. What Pelosi really said was: “The weak response to these hearings has been, ‘Let the election decide.’ That dangerous position only adds to the urgency of our action, because the president is jeopardizing the integrity of the 2020 elections.”
Authors like Harsanyi from National Review, write that “Nancy Pelosi Is Already Attacking the Legitimacy of the 2020 Election” suggesting that even though Trump was not quoting her verbatim statement, he got the gist and substance of it right. The author suggests that Pelosi described presidential elections as a “dangerous notion”.
Pelosi’s statement was taken out of context. She was not questioning the legitimacy of presidential elections or suggesting that they were a dangerous notion, but simply saying that voters need to be able to give an informed choice. Giving up on the impeachment inquiry will not give them enough information to make an informed choice. That is what Pelosi was referring to when she said that the president was jeopardizing the integrity of the 2020 elections.
