CNN: Only lawmaker to have worked 3 impeachment probes says Trump’s Ukraine conduct ‘more serious’ than Nixon’s Watergate

Zoe Lofgren, the only lawmaker who worked on three congressional impeachment probes, claims that Trump’s actions in relation to Ukraine, are “far more serious than Watergate”. Nixon was using his position in the government to hide the Watergate burglary…but at least he did not get a foreign power involved. The Founding Fathers were especially worried about foreign interference in our political system. That is not what Nixon was trying to do, but it is exactly what Trump was trying to do. Therefore, Trump should be impeached because he was doing something which is against our national interest.

Fox News: Deroy Murdock: Trump impeachment vs. Watergate? No comparison. Look at the facts

Trump asked Zelensky for a favor-investigating corruption, in particular, the Bidens and Burisma. However, Zelensky never felt blackmailed or pressured, which is something he confirmed. Trump eventually released the military aid. Sondland testified that Trump told him: “I want nothing. I want no quid pro quo. I only want Zelensky to do the right thing”.
On the other hand, in Nixon’s case, there was both spying and burglary, as well as sabotage. Nixon then used money from a slush fund to keep potential witnesses quiet about the burglary. Therefore, Nixon was also obstructing justice. And all was caught on tape.

Middle ground:

Nixon was complicit in burglary, sabotage and spying, which are all high crimes. He was also attempting to cover up his own crime. Trump was asking Zelensky to investigate Biden and Burisma. It is still not completely clear and proven whether he was doing that to dig up dirt and gain an edge over his rival, or to protect himself and further the investigation into corruption. Additionally, neither of the witnesses has directly implicated Trump. On the other hand, Nixon was caught on tape. Lofgren’s statement is a bit of an exaggeration. Trump was not trying to get foreign power to interfere in our political system…he wanted business dealings of US citizens in Ukraine to be investigated.

At least Nixon was not lying and publicly intimidating witnesses, or preventing them from testifying.
How do you mean " he was not trying to get foreign power to interfere in our political system". What do you call it if he asks Zelensky to investigate his political opponent, but interference?

Trump was not trying to cover up his own crime, but to get the country in which Bidens had their business, to further investigate them-and possibly uncover crime (because he did not know what the outcome would be).
